The Pakistan national team match against the Tajikistan in 2e ronde of the AFC 2026 World Cup Qualification on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 will be held at the Jinnah Sports Stadium Stadium, Islamabad.
Pakistan will try to recover from a crushing defeat to Saudi Arabia when they host Tajikistan at Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad, on Tuesday, 21 November 2023. This match is the second match for both teams in Group G of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asia zone.
Pakistan, who recently returned to action after a three-year absence due to FIFA sanctions, showed great fighting spirit as they beat Cambodia 1-0 in the first round of qualifying. Pakistan’s winning goal was scored by Harun Hamid, who became a hero for his team.
However, Pakistan was unable to repeat their impressive performance when they met Saudi Arabia, one of the strongest teams in Asia. They lost 0-4 without being able to put up any meaningful resistance. This defeat left Pakistan at the bottom of Group G without any points.
Tajikistan, on the other hand, drew 1-1 with Jordan in the opening match of Group G. This match was dramatic because Tajikistan, who scored a goal in the 89th minute by Samiev, was immediately answered by Jordan through Yazan Al Naimat one minute later.
This result puts Tajikistan in third place in Group G with one point, the same as Jordan. Tajikistan also had positive capital before this match, because they won twice in friendly matches against Singapore and Malaysia with a score of 2-0.
Pakistan and Tajikistan have only met once in an official match since 2006, namely in 2013 in the AFC Challenge Cup. Tajikistan won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Khurshed Makhmudov in the 90th minute. This victory made Tajikistan qualify for the semifinals, while Pakistan was eliminated from the group stage. Both teams will certainly want to improve their meeting record when they meet again in World Cup qualifying.
Pakistan relies on their captain Otis Khan, who plays in the attacking midfield position. Khan plays for English League One club Tranmere Rovers and has experience playing at a high level. He also scored a penalty for Pakistan in their 0-4 loss to Kuwait in the 2023 SAFF Cup.
Khan is expected to be an attack organizer and opportunity creator for Pakistan. Apart from Khan, Pakistan also has talented young players, such as Muhammad Waleed Khan, Muhammad Saddam, and Muhammad Hamza Munir, who play in Pakistan’s local leagues.
Meanwhile, Tajikistan has their mainstay strikers Manuchekhr Dzhalilov and Shervoni Mabatshoev who are the top scorers in this competition. Mabatshoev plays for the Tajikistan club, Istiklol, and scored two goals in one match when Tajikistan beat Myanmar 4-0 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June 2022. Who will emerge as the winner?
