The Italian national team will face Malta in the fifth match of Group C qualifying for EURO 2024. This match will take place on Saturday 15/10 in the afternoon at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome. Italy hopes to achieve victory to maintain second place in the group, while Malta tries to provide fierce resistance to the reigning European champions.
Italy is in the process of transitioning under new coach Luciano Spalletti, who replaced Roberto Mancini after EURO 2020. Spalletti wants to take Italy back to attacking football that controls matches, as he did with Napoli last season. Spalletti also gave opportunities to several talented young players, such as Davide Frattesi, Nicolo Zaniolo and Giacomo Raspadori.
Italy have won just three of the six games they have played in 2023. Their last win was over Ukraine 2-1 a month ago, thanks to two goals from Frattesi. Italy are currently in second place in Group C with seven points, the same as Ukraine but have played one game less. Italy needs to win to maintain their chances of qualifying for the finals.
Malta, on the other hand, is the weakest team in group C, and possibly in all of EURO 2024 qualifying. Malta has neither won nor drawn any of the four matches they have played, and have scored just one goal while conceding 14 goals. Malta also does not have any star players or experience at international level, except for right-back Zach Muscat who plays in Portugal.
For this reason, Malta does not have much hope of getting points in this match, but they will try to disturb Italy as much as possible. Malta also has a tradition of giving Italy trouble, especially on their own turf. Malta held Italy to a 1-1 draw in 1983, and only lost 1-0 in 2016.
Regarding players, Italy will be without injured Mattia Zaccagni and Ivan Provedel. Spalletti will likely rely on Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini as center backs. Meanwhile, Malta has no injury or suspension problems.
Italy are clearly a much stronger and experienced team than Malta, but they still need time to adapt to Spalletti’s style of play. Meanwhile, Ray Farrugia’s troops will of course play with discipline and defend tenaciously.
