Morocco and Burkina Faso will face each other in a friendly at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Tuesday, September 12. The Atlas Lions, who advanced to the World Cup semi-finals last December, will look to maintain their unbeaten run in the last four matches against their West African opponents dating back to August 2013.
Meanwhile, the Stallions team, who won Group B in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with 10 points from six matches, will be looking to return to their best form after never winning in the last three matches in qualifying. They played out a goalless draw with Eswatini at the Stade de Marrakech on Friday.
Both teams have confirmed their places in the 2023 African Cup of Nations which will be held in Ivory Coast in January. This friendly match will be an opportunity for the two coaches, Walid Regragui and Hubert Velud, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their teams before facing a major tournament early next year. Both will also give several new players the opportunity to show their abilities.
Morocco has a star squad of 27 players, including goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Paris Saint-Germain right-back Archraf Hakimi and captain Romain Sais. Sevilla forward Youssef En-Nesyri, who is currently seventh on the country’s all-time goalscoring list with 17 goals in 61 appearances, was also called up by Reragui and will likely spearhead the Atlas Lions attack once again.
In this match, Morocco wants to avenge their 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on June 17. Are they capable? as Burkina Faso also have some interesting names in their squad, such as Sheriff Tiraspol midfielder Cedric Badolo, who is doubtful after suffering an injury on Friday.
Then there’s Yago, who currently sits sixth on the country’s all-time appearances list with 73 caps, also earning a place in the Stallions squad and likely to form a centre-back pairing with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.
And of course Bournemouth striker Dango Ouattara, who has scored four goals in five Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games. It is likely that Ouattara will lead Burkina Faso’s attack, along with Cyrille Bayala and Abdoul Tapsoba.
This friendly match will be the 13th meeting between the two teams since September 1994. Morocco is ahead with eight wins, two draws and two defeats. They are also unbeaten in the last four meetings, with three wins and one draw.
