Newcastle will host Liverpool at St. James’ Park in the third week of the Premier League 2023/24 match, Sunday (27/8). This will be a tough match for the two teams who are both ambitious to get into the top four of the standings.
Newcastle is not a team to be trifled with like they used to be. They have created a surprise last season by winning tickets to the Champions League convincingly. Under coach Eddie Howe, The Magpies are the team with the best defense in the 2022/23 Premier League with Man City. They also have a very sharp attack with stars like Miguel Almiron, Alexander Isak and others.
In the transfer market this summer, Newcastle has added many quality players. They managed to bring in right-back Max Aarons from Norwich, attacking midfielder James Ward-Prowse from Southampton and striker Moussa Dembele from Lyon. This can be seen from the 5-1 win over Aston Villa in the opening match of the 2023/24 Premier League.
However, in the second match, Newcastle had to admit Man City’s advantage with a score of 0-1. Despite the loss, they played not bad against the reigning champions. They were able to hold a draw until the 85th minute before finally conceding a single goal from Julian Alvares. Currently, Newcastle are in eighth place with three points, scored five goals and conceded two goals.
Meanwhile, Liverpool just picked up their first win in the Premier League this season by beating Bournemouth 3-1 at home to Anfield. It was a match in which Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota all scored. The three of them formed a very lethal attacking trio for the Reds.
However, the victory meant little. Bournemouth cannot be compared to Liverpool in terms of quality. In the first match, Liverpool were only able to draw 1-1 against Leeds United at Elland Road. Their goal was scored by centre-back Virgil van Dijk who was recovering from a long injury.
Liverpool also experienced some problems at the back. They had to lose left back Andy Robertson who suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Scotland at the 2022 World Cup. Apart from that, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold has also not shown his best performance after being absent from Euro 2020 due to injury as well.
When it comes to playing outside the home, Liverpool are also not playing well. They have only four wins in the last 12 visits in all competitions. That is an achievement that is not enough for them to compete for the Premier League title this season.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 consecutive Premier League matches and the chances of ending Newcastle’s curse are quite high. However, they must be wary as Newcastle have not lost in their last five meetings against them at St. Louis. James’ Park. The last time Liverpool won there was back in 2015 by a score of 2-0.
