Boavista will host Benfica on Monday, 14 August 2023 at the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI, in the opening game of the 2023/24 Portuguese League. This is Benfica’s first game as defending champions, after they won the Portuguese Super Cup by beating Porto 2-0.
Boavista is one of the historic and successful teams in Portuguese football. They won the Portuguese League in 2001 and won several other cup titles. However, after being embroiled in a “match-fixing” scandal in 2008 and being relegated to the second division, Boavista were unable to restore their place.
Since returning to the Portuguese League in the 2014/15 season, Boavista has always been in the bottom half of the table and has not had many opportunities to compete with the big teams. Last season, they only finished 13th out of 18th with 38 points from 34 matches. This season, they haven’t changed much in terms of squad and form either.
In recent friendlies and the Portuguese League Cup, Boavista has been very poor. They lost twice in friendlies against Estoril Praia (0-2) and Rio Ave (1-3). In their first official match of the season, they also failed to progress to the next round after losing 3-4 on penalties to Uniao de Leiria, a second division team, after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
With such a disappointing performance, Boavista has nothing to look forward to when it comes to facing Benfica tonight. They have lost twice to Benfica last season (3-1 and 3-0). This time, they would probably get the same or even worse results.
On the other hand, Benfica is one of the best teams in Portuguese and European football. They have won 38 Portuguese League titles, 26 Portuguese Cup titles and two Champions League titles. Last season, they successfully defended the Portuguese League crown with 85 points from 34 matches, five points ahead of Porto and six points ahead of Sporting Lisbon.
This season, Benfica continued to show their strength by beating Porto 2-0 to win the Portuguese Super Cup. This is their eighth title in the competition, losing only once to Porto. It was also a memorable debut for two new signings Angel Di Maria who moved from Juventus, and Orkun Kokcu who moved from Feyenoord.
Benfica know they will have to go all out to defend their Portuguese league title amid fierce competition from Porto and Sporting Lisbon. However, they weren’t too worried either because their first opponent was only Boavista, a weak team that didn’t have much achievements. They have won easily twice from Boavista last season (3-1 and 3-0). This time, they could do the same or even better.
Based on all the info above, this game is likely to have quite a few goals, and Benfica’s first win of the season. Benfica always scores a lot of goals when they are away, while Boavista often concedes a lot of goals when playing at home. However, Boavista can also score consolation goals as they rarely fail to score at home.
