Atletico will be looking to get their 2023-24 La Liga campaign off to a perfect start when they host newly promoted Granada to the Wanda Metropolitano on Monday evening. Diego Simeone’s side finished third in La Liga last season, 11 points behind champions Barcelona, while Granada return to the top flight as 2022-23 Segunda Division champions.
Atletico have performed very well in the second half of the 2022-23 La Liga season, and if they can start this season well then a title challenge could be a possibility, as both Barcelona and Real Madrid have problems heading into the new season.
Simeone’s team were third in the standings last season, just one point behind second-placed Real Madrid, but they are 11 points behind champions Barcelona, so it’s a big challenge for them to finish on top.
Atletico’s transfer business this summer has been pretty simple, bringing in Javi Galan, Santiago Mourino, Caglar Soyuncu and Cesar Azpilicueta, while there have been no major departures, although Joao Felix is expected to leave before the end of the transfer window. Merah Putih only played four times during pre-season, drawing the last two against Real Sociedad and Sevilla after losing to K-League XI and beating Manchester City.
Atletico will be favorites on Monday night, but they have only actually won one of their last three league games against Granada, including a goalless draw when the two teams met at the Wanda Metropolitano.
On the other hand, Granada’s relegation from La Liga at the end of the 2021-22 season was somewhat of a surprise considering they had finished seventh and ninth in the previous two seasons. However, Paco Lopez’s side managed to return to the top level for the first time by winning the Segunda Division last season, picking up 75 points from their 42 games during a strong campaign.
Granada managed to bring six players to the club during the summer window, with Shon Weissman, Gonzalo Villar, Famara Diedhiou, Gerard Gumbau and Wilson Manafa arriving on permanent deals, while Jesus Vallejo returning on loan from Real Madrid. The team’s chances of staying in the league this season will not depend on their results against the likes of Atletico, but their recent record against the capital team will give them some confidence.
In terms of player news, Atletico managed to register Soyuncu for this match despite some difficulties, and the defender will make his debut for Simeone’s side on Monday night. The same can also be said for Azpilicueta, who arrived from Chelsea, but Jose Gimenez and Reinildo are unavailable for the home team due to injury problems, while Axel Witsel is suspended.
Meanwhile, Granada got the timely return of midfielder Gerard Gumbau after injury. The visiting team will go to Metropolitano with the strongest squad. Most likely coach Paco Lopez will organize Granada to play with a 4-2-2 formation. Where the attacking pair will most likely be Myrto Uzuni and Jose Callejon.
