Nice and Lille will meet for the first time of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season on Friday 11 August at Nice’s Allianz Riviera stadium. This was an interesting and dramatic match between two teams that are not too different in form and strength.
Nice have undergone major changes by bringing in new coach Francesco Farioli, who is young and doesn’t have much experience working in France. However, he has also coached clubs in Turkey and will become the youngest coach in European leagues in 2021. Farioli may bring new and surprising things to Nice.
Nice also managed to hold on to most of the important pillars such as Khéphren Thuram, Morgan Sanson, Terem Moffi and especially Gaetan Laborde. Last season, Laborde was Nice’s top scorer with 13 goals and 3 assists in Ligue 1. Apart from that, they also have two quality new players namely Terem Moffi and Jeremie Boga, two players who can score goals and make a difference.
However, Nice did not prepare well for the new season. They only had 1 win, 1 draw and lost 3 in 5 summer friendlies. Nice’s biggest weakness at the moment is the coordination between the lines and between new and old players. They struggled to create chances and score goals.
On the other hand, LOSC Lille still retains many key players such as Angel Gomes, Adam Ounas or Jonathan David, who scored up to 24 goals in Ligue 1 last season. They also had quite an impressive feat in friendlies this past summer: won 3, drew 1 and lost the only game. However, Lille’s defensive solidity has been lacking in the pre-season phase.
Lille also has no advantage in their past record of meetings with Nice. In the last 7 meetings in Ligue 1, they only won 2, drew 2 and lost 3. Even when visiting Nice, Lille only got 1 win in the last 11 visits in Ligue 1 (lost 5, drew 5).
Entertaining Lille at home to the Allianz Riviera, Nice did not have full strength. Because, midfielder Youssouf Ndayishimiye, striker Billal Brahimi and defender Youcef Atal are out due to injury. Lille also lost Tiago Djalo and Edon Zhegrova through injury.
