Girona will host Lazio at Estadi Montilivi on Sunday (6/8) for their last friendly match of the summer. This will be the first meeting between Girona and Lazio. The two teams are fairly evenly matched in quality, although Lazio may be slightly superior in terms of experience and individuals.
Girona, who won promotion to the top flight last year after three years, were able to stay in 10th place last season. Michel’s team collected 49 points from 38 matches and will start the new season next week by visiting Real Sociedad.
Girona have been gearing up for just that with a number of friendlies to relieve the stiffness after a month off. In five games, the Catalan side won three and drew two, including a 1-1 win over Serie A champions Napoli, who went on to win 3-1 on penalties.
In the summer transfer market, the club has made several good purchases, including bringing in Daley Blind from Bayern Munich and Pablo Torre from Barcelona. The two players are expected to make a positive contribution to the team, both at the back and midfield.
Meanwhile, Lazio has been no less busy during the summer with five matches. The Biancocelesti won all four of their matches in Italy, but were thrashed 3-0 by Aston Villa at Walsall on Thursday.
Maurizio Sarri’s side will play their final friendly before starting their 2023-24 campaign against Lecce next week. Sarri is known as a coach who applies an attractive and attacking style of play, which fits the characteristics of Lazio players.
One of the brightest players this summer has been Ciro Immobile, who has scored seven goals in five friendlies, with all of his goals coming in games in Italy. The Italian national team striker will be the main threat to the Girona defense, whose reliability is still in doubt.
