Man Utd will face Bilbao in their last match on the 2023 pre-season tour. This match will take place on Sunday (6/8) in Dublin. This will be the last chance for coach Ten Hag to evaluate his players before entering the new season.
Man Utd is in a less encouraging condition after losing three times in a row on their pre-season tour. They lost to Wrexham, Lens and Celtic with unsatisfactory scores. Although the results of friendly matches do not determine the achievements in the official season, they still show the quality and mentality of the team.
Ten Hag admitted that he was not satisfied with his team’s performance and said that they needed to improve in many aspects. He also revealed that he was still looking for new players who could strengthen his squad. However, he faced obstacles in terms of player transfers.
On the other hand, Bilbao also did not have good preparations for the new season. They have only won one of the seven friendly matches they have played. They have also failed to score in their last three games against Racing Santader, Celtic and Guadalajara.
Bilbao coach, Ernesto Valverde, admits that his team still needs time to adapt to his playing style. He also said that he was still looking for players who could improve the quality of his team. He hopes that the match against Man United can be a good test for his team.
In the two previous meetings, Bilbao always won over Man Utd. They eliminated Man United from the Europa League in the 2011/2012 season with an aggregate of 5-3. However, both teams have gone through a lot of changes since then and this clash may be different.
It is thought that Man Utd will use their second tier team against Bilbao as they will play Lens at Old Trafford the day before. Some young players like Evans, Hannibal, Hansen-Aaroen might get a chance to prove themselves. As for Bilbao, they only have one injured player, namely Yeray Alvarez.
