On Tuesday, 1 August 2023, AC Milan will face Barcelona in a friendly match held in the United States. Both teams are giants of European football with a long history and tradition. This game will be the last test for both teams before starting the new season in their domestic league.
Milan has not been able to perform optimally on American soil, with only getting one point from two friendly matches. They lost 2-3 to Real Madrid in the first match, and could only draw 2-2 with Juventus, their eternal rivals in Serie A. The Rossoneri still have to face two more tough opponents, namely Barcelona and Monza, before starting the new Serie A season 2023/24 away to Bologna headquarters on the upcoming 21/8.
To strengthen its team, Milan have brought in seven new players this summer, namely Samuel Chukwueze, Christian Pulisic, Tijjani Reijnders, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Noah Okafor, Luka Romero and Marco Sportiello. However, they also had to let go of Sandro Tonali, their captain and best player.
On the other hand, Barcelona started preparations for the 2023/24 season by losing 3-5 to Arsenal. But then they bounced back with a 3-0 win over Real Madrid. The team from Catalonia will conclude their pre-season tour of the United States against AC Milan, before welcoming Tottenham to the Joan Gamper Trophy title battle on 8/8.
The last time the two teams met was also in a friendly match, in August 2018, when AC Milan narrowly won 1-0. However, it will be very difficult for the Rossoneri to repeat this feat, as Barcelona have a team with more quality and more confidence after their big win in the recent El Clasico.
In this friendly, Milan were unable to field Davide Calabria, who was injured in a draw against Juventus. Meanwhile, Rafael Leao and Pulisic will join Olivier Giroud up front in search of an effective combination.
Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembele is tipped to start despite much speculation over his future. Dembele will play alongside Robert Lewandowski in attack, while Raphinha is likely to be the last player in this sector. However, Andreas Christensen and Ilkay Gundogan will be out due to injuries sustained in the game against Real Madrid.
