Feyenoord will host Benfica at the Feijenoord Stadium on Sunday in an exciting pre-season friendly. The two teams were champions of the Dutch and Portuguese national leagues last season, and are now gearing up for new challenges next season.
Feyenoord drew 1-1 against Villarreal in their last friendly. French midfielder Etienne Capoue’s goal for Villarreal in the first half was answered by a penalty from Iran striker Alireza Jahanbakhsh for Feyenoord in the second.
Benfica, on the other hand, after an easy win over A-Nassr, they lost 2-0 to Burnley in their last friendly. Goals from left-back Owen Dodgson and Swedish centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal sealed the win for Burnley.
In four meetings between the two teams, Feyenoord won one, lost two and drew one. Their last meeting was back in 2014 in the Europa League, when Benfica won 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.
Feyenoord won the league last season under Arne Slot, and then sold one of their star players, Orkun Kokcu, to Benfica for €25 million. They also brought in several new players; midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki joins from Twente, while forward Calvin Stengs, formerly of AZ Alkmaar and Nice, is also signed.
Kokcu was a key player for Feyenoord’s success and the 22-year-old was linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world before moving to Benfica. Slot himself was a coach of interest to many clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur keenly interested in him, but the Dutchman decided to sign a new contract with Feyenoord.
Benfica also won the league last season, and are one of the most exciting teams to watch. Despite losing mainstay midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea midway through the season, Benfica did manage to win a trophy.
Apart from Kokcu, the transfer that caught everyone’s attention was the arrival of Argentine winger Angel Di Maria for free. Di Maria is no stranger to Benfica fans, having started his career in Europe with the Portuguese club before joining Real Madrid. The 35-year-old returns to the club as a World Cup winner and as one of the greats of modern times, and his creativity and technical qualities can go a long way.
