Nottingham Forest will continue their preparations for a challenging Premier League season by taking on Levante in a pre-season friendly in Spain on Saturday. Steve Cooper’s team is still in the land of bullfighters after narrowly losing 1-0 to Valencia a few days ago, while Levante will be back competing in the Segunda Division this season.
Forest had difficulty adapting to the Premier League after promotion via the Championship playoffs in 2021-22, but they managed to end their comeback season on a positive note. They made sure of survival in the Premier League with good results against Arsenal, Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion in April and May, and they are now looking to improve on their 16th place last season in 2023-24.
Forest started their pre-season run by beating Notts County 1-0 in the local derby, but they had to concede Valencia by the same scoreline on Tuesday. Moussa Niakhate, their main defender, had to be substituted in the first half with a twisted elbow – and Javi Guerra took advantage of Forest’s defensive weakness to score the only goal in the 47th minute.
On the other hand, Levante missed out on promotion to La Liga last season despite finishing third on 72 points, level with Las Palmas in second, but trailing on goal difference. They qualified for the playoffs, beating Albacete 6-1 on aggregate in the semifinals, but lost dramatically to Alaves in the final on an extra-time goal.
Of course, Levante will be pushing hard for a return to Spain’s top flight in 2023-24, but they will have to contend with other tough sides in the Segunda Division which won’t give them a chance.
Levante drew 1-1 with Stoke City, Nottingham Forest’s Championship rivals, in the previous friendly, with Alejandro Cantero scoring the opener before Tyrese Campbell equalized in the second half.
Javier Calleja’s side still have one pre-season game to go against Olympiacos of Greece, but they must quickly focus on the start of the 2023-24 Segunda Division season that is just around the corner. Levante is still without Pablo Martinez who has been seriously injured since the end of last season and missed Saturday’s game.
Javier Calleja fielded four new players last time out against Stoke, namely Oriol Rey, Oscar Clemente, Adrian de la Fuente and Sergio Lozano. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest will be without Moussa Niakhate who injured his shoulder against Valencia a few days ago, as well as Giulian Biancone who is still recovering from a long knee injury.
After facing Levante on Saturday, Forest will play Leeds United, PSV Eindhoven, Rennes and Eintracht Frankfurt in other friendlies before traveling to Arsenal in their Premier League opener on August 12. Who will emerge victorious in this match?
