Sevilla will face Cordoba in their first friendly match to welcome the new 2023/24 season. This match will be played on Friday, 14 July 2023, at the neutral stadium Calle Nueva Via Montecastillo, in Montecastillo, city of Jerez de la Frontera, province of Cadiz, Spain.
Both teams are from Spain, but play at different levels. Sevilla is one of the big teams in La Liga, the most prestigious league in the country of Matador. They have far better quality than Cordoba, who only compete in the third division, two levels below Sevilla.
Sevilla was not very satisfactory in the domestic league last season. They only finished sixth, far from the Champions League zone. However, they showed their class in Europe by winning the Europa League title for the sixth time in the club’s history.
Cordoba also did not impress in the third division last season. They were only able to place 11th in the second group, failing to qualify for the promotion play-offs. They were also knocked out in the last 32 of the Spanish King’s Cup by Real Sociedad.
In their last meeting in the Spanish King’s Cup season 21/22, the weaker Cordoba managed to hold Sevilla 0-0 at home. However, that was the best result they could get. In the three previous friendly matches between the two teams, Sevilla won once at home and lost twice away in 2013 and 2012.
This match will be an opportunity for both teams to test their strengths and try new strategies ahead of the new season. Sevilla certainly want to start with a win to boost their confidence and morale. Cordoba is also not going to give up easily and will try to provide fierce resistance.
Even though they didn’t feature their strongest squad, Sevilla still managed to control the game against a third division team like Cordoba.
