Match Preview

Brest just picked up their first win since January with a 1-0 win over Strasbourg. Franck Honorat’s only goal at the end of the first half gave Brest three important points so they can avoid the relegation zone. Even so, their position is not secure yet because they are only one point away from the red zone.

This year, Brest have only managed two wins at their home ground, among which were beating 19th-placed Troyes and bottom team Angers at the end of January. However, the surprising thing is that Brest did better away from home, even losing only 0-1 at home to PSG back in September.

Hosts Brest are currently in 15th place with 23 points from 26 matches played this season. Even though they are above the red zone, coach Eric Roy’s team still has to improve their game if they want to be successful in avoiding relegation.

However, to be able to beat PSG is not easy for Brest. The home team have managed only one win from their last 12 matches against PSG in all competitions. The last time Brest beat PSG was back in 1985, by which time none of the players in the current squad had been born.

PSG will face Brest after their disappointing Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich. PSG failed to hit their main target, and have just suffered six defeats in the last three months.

During 2022, PSG only suffered four defeats, but their defeat against Bayern did affect the mentality of PSG’s players. This defeat means that PSG must leave the Champions League in the round of 16 for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

PSG has no other target than winning the Ligue 1 title this season. Les Parisiens are currently at the top of the Ligue 1 standings with 63 points from 26 matches. Christophe Galtier’s men currently have an eight-point advantage over the second-placed team and it is unlikely they will lose their top spot for the remainder of the season.

However, PSG can still be inconsistent on the road, they have lost five of their last nine away fixtures. The game against Brest is a good opportunity for PSG to get three more points and maintain their top position in the standings.

Of course, the difference in quality between PSG and Brest is obvious. PSG players’ salaries in just two weeks have exceeded Brest players’ salaries for one year. Even though PSG has spent a lot of money on player purchases, this team is still fragile and easy to destroy.

Therefore, Brest’s struggle to maintain its position in Ligue 1 also cannot be ignored. With great expectations from the fans and support from home, they can surprise by forcing a draw or even a win.
