Match Preview
Scotland will host Cyprus at Hampden Park, Glasgow on Friday (24/3/2023) at 09.00 am ET in the first match of Group A qualifying for Euro 2024. Both teams hope to start their campaign with a win to chase a ticket to the finals.
Scotland managed to qualify for Euro 2020 after beating Serbia on penalties in the playoffs. However, they failed to progress to the last 16 after picking up just one point from three games in Group D. Steve Clarke’s side are now looking to establish themselves as competitive at European level by securing a place at Euro 2024.
Cyprus did not participate in Euro 2020 after only finishing fifth in qualifying Group I with ten points from ten matches. The team now coached by Temuri Ketsbaia is now trying to improve their performance and surprise their opponents in Group A which also contains Spain, Scotland and Norway.
Facing Cyprus, Scotland will not take it lightly. Clarke is predicted to rely on captain and Liverpool centre-back Andy Robertson as the leader and organizer of attacks from the left. Robertson has the experience and qualities to make the difference for his team.
On the other hand, Cyprus, who arrived with a 3-2 win over Israel in a friendly in November last year, will be hoping for striker Ioannis Pittas, who was their top scorer in Euro 2020 qualifying with three goals. Pittas belongs to the Apollon Limassol club which plays in the Cypriot football division.
