Match Preview
Portugal and Liechtenstein will begin their journey towards Euro 2024 when they face off in Lisbon on Thursday night. Both teams are under the direction of a new coach who wants to bring positive changes after the failure in the previous tournament.
The Selecao das Quinas will no longer be led by Fernando Santos, who stepped down after a disappointing 2022 World Cup. Santos helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League, but failed to capitalize on a golden generation of Portuguese players in subsequent tournaments.
Roberto Martinez took over as coach of Portugal after leaving Belgium on a dismal note. Martinez had many star players in Belgium, but was unable to lead them to any trophies. Now, he must prove he can restore Portugal’s glory with a squad that is also full of talent.
Portugal has good capital for this match, as they won three of their last four matches in all competitions. They also have a perfect record against Liechtenstein, with seven wins from their previous seven encounters.
Liechtenstein are the weakest team in Group J and possibly in all of Euro 2024 qualifiers. They are ranked 198 in the world and have never made it to the finals of any major tournament. They have also scored just four goals in their last 20 European qualifying games.
Liechtenstein has just changed coaches after Martin Stocklasa left for FC Vaduz earlier this month. Rene Pauritsch was appointed caretaker coach for this international window after five years in charge between 2013 and 2018. Pauritsch has a tough task to improve for a team that has lost 11 of their last 13 matches in all competitions.
Pauritsch will probably rely on a defensive formation to try to limit Portugal’s attack as much as possible. Some of the key players for Liechtenstein are goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel, midfielder Marcel Buchel and striker Yanik Frick.
Portugal itself has a strong squad with lots of options in every position. Cristiano Ronaldo, who now plays for the Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr FC, is still the captain and main scorer for the Portugal national team even though he is 38 years old. He will be supported by the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
It is predicted that Coach Martinez will probably make some changes from the team that Santos usually plays to give opportunities to young players or those who are rarely played. Some names that could get a chance are Pedro Goncalves, Nuno Mendes, Ruben Dias and Joao Palhinha.

News about Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Portugal vs Liechtenstein match

Ronaldo opened up about his departure from Manchester United. He says that he is a better man after going through a bad phase in his career and has no regrets about his decision. He is also a welcome breath of fresh air in the Portugal national team under new coach Roberto Martinez.
Hunt for international records, CR7 is reluctant to retire from Portugal even though he is 38 years old. He denied rumors of retiring from international duty and said he would continue playing as long as the Portugal national team needed him. He was pleased with the call-up to the squad and compared it to the first.
The 5 Ballon d’Or holder said the Saudi Arabian League would be the 4th most competitive in the world. He said he was surprised by the level of competitiveness in the Saudi Pro League since joining Al Nassr FC in January. The captain of the Portugal national team said that the league has many quality players and has the potential to develop even better.
Ronaldo is proving his skills again. The former Real Madrid player scored from a spectacular free kick in Al Nassr’s 2-1 win over Abha Club in Week 22 of the Saudi Pro League. This goal was his first free kick goal since October 2019 while still at Juventus.
Playing at Euro 2024, Cristiano Ronaldo is the oldest player to have appeared at the Euros in history. He is 39 years old when the tournament starts in June 2024. He is also the first player to appear at six Euros since 2004.
