Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg rebranded his company from Facebook to META, a virtual world called Metaverse. Facebook will now only be the same application like Instagram, WhatsApp, and FB Messenger.
Metaverse is a virtual space created as an alternative place to the digital world where people can work, socialize, play, and do many other daily activities.
The term Metaverse has become increasingly known since many superhero films have been produced, especially by Marvel Studios. The metaverse world is created as if there is a world other than the earth and the perpetrators are the same people, only sometimes they have different duties and responsibilities.
Metaverse itself already exists in the dystopian novel “Snow Crash” which was published three decades ago. The term metaverse in this novel refers broadly to the idea of a shared virtual world that is accessible to people using different devices.
Mark Zuckerberg took this concept to rebrand the Facebook Brand with a new brand name, META Platform Inc. The Facebook name will still exist but only for applications that are part of META such as (IG) Instagram, (WA) WhatsApp, and FB Messenger.
In a meeting at Facebook Connect 2021 which took place last Thursday, October 28, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg’s intent and purpose were to make META a holding company.
“Right now, our brand is so closely tied to one product that it’s impossible to represent everything we do today, let alone in the future,” Zuckerberg said at the event, Thursday (28/10).
There are no changes in the company structure after Facebook’s rebranding to Meta. So META will unify all applications and technologies created into one brand.
It’s just that a new logo was created for META Platform Inc. This logo depicts something infinite. Meta in Greek has ‘beyond’.
“I used to study Classics, and the word “meta” comes from a Greek word meaning “beyond”. For me, it symbolizes that there is always more to build on, and there is always the next chapter of the story,” said the husband of Priscilla Chan.
Previously, Google had done the same thing in 2015 where the search engine giant created a holding company under the name Alphabet Inc.
This is to illustrate that Google will not only focus on search engines but also unite all other fields related to the world of technology including developing Cloud, high-speed internet, autonomous cars, and others.
