A biographical film about the world of sports and business, ‘Air: Courting A Legend’, is scheduled to start airing on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in cinemas. The drama, directed by Ben Affleck, whose script was written by Alex Convery, tells the story of the origins of Air Jordan shoes.
This film takes place in 1984, before Nike became one of the leading sports shoe brands. The story centers on the tenacious struggles of a Nike, Inc. employee. who is trying to strike a business deal with budding basketball player, Michael Jordan.
Matt Damon stars as Sonny Vaccaro, an iconic sports marketing executive best known for sealing the deal between Nike and Michael Jordan as his first sneaker contract. Air: Courting A Legend Storyline
This film takes place in the 1980s, when Nike was struggling to be able to compete with a number of competitors such as Adidas and Converse. At that time, company executives were looking for ways to popularize their shoes in the basketball market.
It was then that Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) had the idea to recruit Michael Jordan. But management doubted the idea. Moreover, at that time Michael Jordan was still a rookie player who had not been proven worthy of investment.
Phil Knight (Ben Affleck), CEO and co-founder of Nike, cautions that Jordan has no intention of signing a contract with their company. Besides, it seems unreasonable to concentrate the entire budget on just one person.
But Sonny had no intention of burying his ideas. He continues his efforts, from contacting Jordan’s agent, David Falk (Chris Messina), to traveling to North Carolina to meet Jordan’s family.
Again, his efforts seem to have hit a dead end when the basketball player’s mother, Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis), does not allow Sonny to meet her son until she is sure that Sonny is someone who can be trusted.
