Synopsis
Lee Tae’s father succeeded in becoming the king of the new dynasty after overthrowing the previous king with the help of Park Gye Won (Jang Hyuk). As the eldest legal son, Lee Tae (Lee Joon) automatically becomes the crown prince and prepares to succeed his father in the future.
But after Lee Tae becomes the next king, he has faith that whatever actions he makes as a king can be justified to achieve the goal. In other words, Lee Tae longed for an absolute monarchy form of government where the leader was in full power because there were no binding legal restrictions.
The idea was strongly opposed by Park Gye Won. As First Deputy Prime Minister, Park Gye Won’s position has indeed become a real power in Joseon, even stronger than the king.
Park Gye Won and Choi Ga Yeon (Park Ji Yun) had become lovers before a sudden drastic change brought their relationship to an end. Choi Ga Yeon then becomes an ambitious queen dowager, while Park Gye Won becomes a very powerful figure in the government.
On the other hand, a daughter of a noble family, Yoo Jung (Kang Han Na), has been considered by Lee Tae as his wife. As a result, Yoo Jung’s family begins to get involved in a power struggle in the kingdom.
Meanwhile to defend his ideas, Lee Tae is forced to choose between monarchy or love after he gets involved in a heated political battle against Yoo Jung.
